George Walkem was a Canadian politician who served as the Premier of British Columbia from 1878 to 1882. He was a member of the Conservative Party and served as Premier during a time of significant economic and social change in the province. Walkem was born in Ireland in 1834 and immigrated to Canada as a young man. He settled in British Columbia and became involved in politics, eventually being elected to the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia in 1871. In 1878, he was chosen by the Conservative Party to serve as Premier, and he held that position for four years. During his time in office, Walkem worked to promote economic development and improve relations between the provincial government and First Nations communities. After leaving office, he continued to be active in politics and public life in British Columbia until his death in 1906.
