The British Columbia provincial election in 2009 was held on May 12, 2009. The election was called by the incumbent Liberal Party Premier, Gordon Campbell, who had formed a majority government after the 2005 election. The election saw a relatively low level of voter turnout, with approximately 50% of eligible voters casting a ballot.
The main issues in the 2009 election included healthcare, education, the economy, and the environment. The Liberal Party campaigned on its economic record, emphasizing its efforts to balance the budget, create jobs, and attract investment to the province. The New Democratic Party (NDP) focused on social issues, promising to invest in healthcare, education, and affordable housing. The Green Party campaigned on a platform of environmental protection and sustainability.
In the end, the election resulted in a majority government for the Liberal Party, which won 49 seats in the 85-seat Legislative Assembly. The NDP won 35 seats, while the Green Party did not win any seats. Gordon Campbell remained as Premier of British Columbia, and his government continued to focus on economic growth and job creation.
However, the Liberal government's introduction of the harmonized sales tax (HST) in 2009 became a major issue in the election, with many voters expressing opposition to the tax. The HST combined the provincial sales tax and federal goods and services tax, and was seen by many as a tax increase on everyday purchases. The tax continued to be a controversial issue, and in 2011, the province held a non-binding referendum on whether to keep the tax or return to the previous system of separate sales taxes. The province voted to repeal the HST, and the tax was eventually phased out in 2013.
